Mozambique Demands Measurable Results in Air Mozambique Restructuring

Maputo exige des résultats chiffrés dans la restructuration d’Air Mozambique

The Mozambican government is demanding concrete actions, clear deadlines and measurable results from the restructuring of national carrier Linhas Aéreas de Moçambique (LAM), which operates under the Air Mozambique brand. The objective is to restore the airline’s operational and financial performance, improve passenger services and reduce its reliance on public funding.

The demand was reiterated on October 14, 2026, by the Minister of Transport and Logistics, João Matlombe, during the ministry’s second coordination meeting, held in Macaneta, Marracuene District, near Maputo.

According to the minister, the restructuring process must go beyond assessments and successive meetings. It must deliver measurable improvements in corporate management, fleet utilization, operational efficiency and the quality of services provided to passengers.

Key priorities include cost control, revenue growth, stronger operational discipline and greater accountability among the airline’s management team. The government aims to make LAM more reliable, improve its efficiency and establish a sustainable financial footing over the long term.

João Matlombe also highlighted LAM’s strategic role in domestic connectivity, territorial integration, tourism development and links with international markets. However, he stressed that the airline’s importance to the country should not justify persistent inefficiencies or continued dependence on state support.

Monitoring the restructuring process will be essential to assess the implementation of announced measures and their impact on the airline’s performance, particularly flight regularity and passenger confidence.

Separately, the minister called for an urgent review of domestic airfares to make air travel more competitive and affordable. Any changes, however, will need to take into account aviation safety requirements and the financial sustainability of operators in the sector.

Through these demands, the Mozambican authorities intend to ensure that LAM’s restructuring is guided by measurable objectives, clearly defined responsibilities and tangible results that demonstrate progress.
