Comoros: ASECNA Assesses Ouani and Bandar-es-Salam Airfields Ahead of Reintegration

A technical mission from the Agency for the Safety of Air Navigation in Africa and Madagascar (ASECNA) was received in Moroni on October 19, 2026, by the Minister of Maritime and Air Transport, Hassane Alfeine Yasmine. The visit is part of the process to reintegrate Ouani Airfield on the island of Anjouan and Bandar-es-Salam Airfield on the island of Mohéli into ASECNA.

The initiative follows efforts led by the minister in close collaboration with the National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACM) to bring the two facilities back into ASECNA’s aviation management and safety framework.

The process has passed two key milestones. In August 2025, a final communiqué adopted in N’Djamena, Chad, endorsed the principle of integrating the two airfields. In July 2026, a resolution adopted in Ciudad de la Paz, Equatorial Guinea, reaffirmed this decision.

The current technical mission marks a more operational phase of the process. It aims to conduct a comprehensive assessment of both facilities to identify the infrastructure upgrades, technical adjustments and compliance requirements needed to meet international standards for aviation safety, security and airport operations.

Following the assessment, the necessary compliance measures can be identified and used to guide the next stages of the reintegration process.

Through this initiative, the Ministry of Maritime and Air Transport, ANACM and ASECNA are reaffirming their commitment to completing the reintegration of Ouani and Bandar-es-Salam airfields. The initiative is intended to strengthen safety and operational standards at these facilities, which play an important role in air connectivity for the islands of Anjouan and Mohéli.
